«Alfanhuí» is the fantasy novel by Rafael Sánchez Ferlosio, published by Ediciones Destino in paperback (229 pages, in Spanish).
Alfanhuí sees the world in a wondrous way: he is friends with lizards, a weathercock rooster teaches him colours, and he studies with a taxidermist. His adventures, halfway between the real and the fantastic, form a coming-of-age novel with echoes of a modern Lazarillo, written in luminous, precise prose.
Originally published in 1951 as «Industrias y andanzas de Alfanhuí»; this edition, number 47 of Destinolibro, bears the subtitle «Y el corazón caliente. Dientes, pólvora, febrero».
A classic of twentieth-century Spanish narrative, for readers interested in magical realism and in the early work of Cervantes Prize winner Rafael Sánchez Ferlosio.
Rafael Sánchez Ferlosio was a Spanish writer. In 2004 he was awarded the Premio Cervantes for his literary oeuvre.
