«A Morte de Ivan Ilitch» is the novel by Leão Tolstoi, published by Quasi Edições in paperback (91 pages, in Portuguese).
A high-ranking judicial official, Ivan Ilitch, understands as death approaches how empty his life has been: his career, his social circle and his relationship with those closest to him are revealed as a farce. Facing the inevitable end, he wonders whether his decisions were the right ones and whether he ever lived authentically, in a reflection on death and the meaning of human relationships.
Original title: «Смерть Ивана Ильича» (1886). This Portuguese edition, translated by Adolfo Casais Monteiro, was published in 2008.
Recommended for readers of classic Russian literature and for those seeking a short novel about death, consciousness and authenticity.
