She was born in the Bronx, New York, on 24 December 1927.
Her first thriller, Where Are the Children?, appeared in 1975 and launched her career.
She co-wrote several books with her daughter Carol Higgins Clark and later with Alafair Burke.
In 2000 she received the Grand Master Award from the Mystery Writers of America for her body of work.
She died in Naples, Florida, on 31 January 2020 at the age of 92.
