He was born in Tacoma, Washington in 1920 and worked as a journalist on the West Coast of the United States before turning to fiction.
He published Dune in 1965 and the novel won both the Hugo and Nebula awards for best novel.
The ecological landscape of Dune was inspired by a feature he wrote about the shifting dunes of Oregon.
He took a deep interest in ecology, Islam, Zen and psychoanalysis, themes that he wove into the saga.
He wrote six novels of the Dune cycle between 1965 and 1985, before dying of cancer in 1986.
