He popularised the term 'Jazz Age' for the 1920s in the United States through his collection Tales of the Jazz Age (1922).
He was a close friend of Ernest Hemingway, whom he met in Paris during the Lost Generation years.
His wife Zelda Sayre, a writer and dancer, suffered from schizophrenia and inspired several of his female characters.
The Great Gatsby was published in 1925 to modest success and became a classic only after the Second World War.
He died of a heart attack at 44 in Hollywood, where he was trying to make a living writing film scripts.
