He practised as a doctor all his life and said that medicine was his 'lawful wife' and literature his 'mistress'.
In 1890 he travelled across Siberia to the prison island of Sakhalin to investigate the conditions of the convicts.
He wrote nearly 500 short stories and plays that have decisively shaped modern fiction.
He married the actress Olga Knipper of the Moscow Art Theatre, where his plays were premiered, in 1901.
He died of tuberculosis in a German spa in 1904; his last words, in German, were reportedly 'it's a long time since I have drunk champagne'.
