Her real name is Erika Mitchell and she was born in London on 7 March 1963.
Before becoming a writer she worked as a television executive at Channel 4.
Fifty Shades of Grey began as a Twilight fan fiction before being rewritten for publication.
The first book appeared in 2011 and the trilogy has sold more than 165 million copies worldwide.
In 2012 she was included on the Time 100 list of the most influential people in the world.
