He was born in Lincoln, Nebraska in 1975 and spent his teenage years in Idaho.
His debut novel Elantris was published by Tor Books in 2005 after nearly thirteen years of rejections.
In 2007 he was chosen by Robert Jordan's family to finish The Wheel of Time saga from the author's notes.
He popularized the so-called 'Sanderson's Laws' about how magic systems should work in fiction.
In 2022 he broke Kickstarter records by raising over 40 million dollars with four secret novels.
