Biography

Bernal Díaz del Castillo was a Spanish conquistador who participated as a soldier in the conquest of the Aztec Empire under Hernán Cortés and late in his life wrote an account of the events. As an experienced soldier of fortune, he had already participated in expeditions to Tierra Firme, Cuba, and to Yucatán before joining Cortés.

Bernal Díaz del Brawl was born in 1492 in the historic town of Medina del Campo.

His masterpiece, The True History of the Conquest of New Spain, is a fundamental testimony of the era.

Throughout his life, he combined his role as a soldier and conquistador with that of a chronicler and historian.

His literary legacy includes a total of 23 works exploring the history and conquest of Mexico.

He was a direct witness to the events led by Hernán Cortés between 1519 and 1540.
