Biography

John Lawrence Ashbery was an American poet and art critic.

John Ashbery was born in Rochester in 1927 and became one of the most influential figures in American poetry.

Beyond his prolific career as a poet, he worked as an art critic, journalist, and translator.

His masterpiece, Self-Portrait in a Convex Mirror, is a fundamental pillar of 20th-century literature.

He humorously described himself as a homegrown surrealist whose poetry defies all logic.

Throughout his life, he won nearly every major American award for poetry.
