«Yo, el rey» is the historical novel by Juan Antonio Vallejo-Nágera, published by Editorial Planeta in paperback (253 pages, in Spanish).
In 1808, Joseph Bonaparte goes to Bayonne at Napoleon's behest, who asks him to renounce the kingdom of Naples to take the Spanish throne. The intrigues of the royal family, Murat's repression in Madrid, and the advance of the guerrillas show Joseph that his good intentions clash with a hostile reality.
Novel winner of the Planeta Prize in 1985; originally published that year, this Planeta edition is from 1994.
For readers of historical fiction who want to approach the Spain of 1808 and the figure of Joseph Bonaparte.
