«Últimas notas de Thomas F. para la humanidad» is the short story collection by Kjell Askildsen (Lengua de Trapo, paperback, 128 pages, in Spanish).
The stories present Thomas F., a surly and grumpy old man who views the world with distrust, though beneath his bad temper a lucid wit emerges. The prose, sober and stripped-down, describes relationships that never quite come together, lives marked by dissatisfaction and contained emotions; each story seems to revolve around something unsaid that the reader must intuit.
With the subtitle «y un repentino pensamiento liberador». Translated by Kirsti Baggethun and Asunción Lorenzo; 2nd edition (2003), number 20 of Otras Lenguas. Norwegian Critics' Prize.
For readers of contemporary short fiction interested in Scandinavian minimalist narrative and in lucid, grumpy characters.
