«The Wonder» is the psychological suspense novel by Emma Donoghue, published by Picador in paperback (291 pages, in English).
Set in 1850s Ireland, it tells the story of an eleven-year-old girl who stops eating but remains alive, attracting a nurse sent to investigate whether it is a fraud and a journalist eager for a story. Inspired by real cases of «fasting girls» from the 16th to the 20th century, it presents a tense duel between faith, science and love.
Originally published in 2016, it was nominated for the Scotiabank Giller Prize, the Shirley Jackson Award and the Goodreads Choice Award for historical fiction, among other recognitions.
Recommended for reading clubs, as it combines historical drama, psychological suspense and moral dilemmas that invite debate.
