«Rights of Man» is Thomas Paine's political philosophy essay, published by Phoenix in paperback (238 pages, in English).
Key text of eighteenth-century political radicalism, written as a defence of the French Revolution and a response to Edmund Burke. Paine attacks hereditary governments, analyses the American Constitution and proposes a welfare state for England. His defence of individual liberty and natural rights made him a reference point for republican thought.
Originally published in 1791. This Everyman's Library edition includes a thematic introduction, author chronology and foreword by Tony Benn.
Recommended for those interested in Enlightenment political thought, the history of revolutions and classic essays.
Thomas Paine was an English-born American Founding Father, inventor, political philosopher, and statesman. His pamphlets Common Sense (1776) and The American Crisis (1776–1783) framed the Patriot argument for independence from Great Britain at the outset of the American Revolution. Paine advanced Enlightenment-era arguments for human rights that shaped revolutionary discourse on both sides of the Atlantic.
