«The Guest Cat» is the Japanese novel by Takashi Hiraide, published in paperback (140 pages, in English).
The life of a freelance writer couple in a rented house in Tokyo goes on without much incident until a neighbourhood cat starts coming into their kitchen. The animal's visits fill their days with small pleasures and revive communication between them, but an unexpected turn tests that new harmony.
Translated from the Japanese by Eric Selland, the book won the Kiyama Shohei Prize and was a bestseller in France and the US.
A read for cat lovers and fans of contemporary Japanese fiction, with an intimate look at relationships and routine.
