He was born James Dover Grant in Coventry, England, on 29 October 1954, and grew up in Birmingham.
He spent eighteen years as a presentation director at Britain's Granada Television before being made redundant in 1995.
He wrote his first Jack Reacher novel, Killing Floor, after that redundancy; it was published in 1997.
The Tom Cruise films (2012, 2016) and the Prime Video Reacher series (from 2022) turned the character into a global phenomenon.
Since 2020 he has co-written the series with his brother Andrew Grant, who publishes as Andrew Child.
