«Shadow Baby» is the contemporary fiction novel by Margaret Forster, published by Penguin UK in paperback (352 pages, in English).
Evie and Shona are born nearly seventy years apart and share the same starting point: both were abandoned by their mothers as babies. That absence obsesses them, driving them to seek, follow and reclaim the woman who left them. A story about motherhood, abandonment and guilt that echoes across generations.
The novel was originally published in 1996; this Penguin UK edition is from July 1997.
For readers of contemporary fiction interested in stories about mothers and daughters, abandonment and family relationships.

Margaret Forster was an English novelist, biographer, memoirist, historian and critic, best known for the 1965 novel Georgy Girl, made into a successful film of the same name, which inspired a hit song by The Seekers. Other successes were a 2003 novel, Diary of an Ordinary Woman, biographies of Daphne du Maurier and Elizabeth Barrett Browning, and her memoirs Hidden Lives and Precious Lives.
