«Rouge flamenco» is the horror and urban fantasy novel by Jeanne Faivre d'Arcier, published by Pocket in paperback (264 pages, in French).
Carmilla becomes a vampire in 1840 in Algiers. A flamenco dancer and modern woman, she believes her species must adapt: fund research on blood purification and create a safe supply network. This enrages the older vampires, clinging to black magic, and unleashes a war between tradition and modernity.
Subtitled «Biographie d'une vampire», it is the first instalment of the series «L'Opéra Macabre / Trilogie en Rouge». The work originally appeared in 1993; this Pocket edition is from 1995.
For readers of horror and urban fantasy who want a vampire story with a female protagonist and a conflict between tradition and modernity.
