Born Judith Rumelt on 27 July 1973 in Tehran, Iran, to American parents.
Before turning to YA fantasy she worked as an entertainment journalist in New York.
She began as a Harry Potter fanfiction writer before publishing her debut, City of Bones, in 2007.
Her series The Mortal Instruments, The Infernal Devices, The Dark Artifices and The Last Hours form a single shared universe.
The film adaptation The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones was released in 2013, followed by the TV series Shadowhunters (2016-2019).
