«Rojo y negro» is the novel by Stendhal published by Bruguera in 1980, in hardback (571 pages, in Spanish).
Novel inspired by a real event that follows Julien Sorel, an ambitious young man of humble origins who enters as a tutor in the house of Monsieur de Rênal. Between loves and intrigues, his rise in French society during the Restoration clashes with hypocrisy, money and the clergy; the result: a critical reflection of the bourgeoisie and human passions.
Volume 50 of the Club Bruguera collection, within the Universal Literature Collection. Translation by Emma Calatayud; the French original, «Le Rouge et le Noir», was published in 1830.
Aimed at readers of 19th-century classics and French literature: ambition, social hypocrisy and rise in Restoration France.

Marie-Henri Beyle, better known by his pen name Stendhal, was a French writer. Best known for the novels Le Rouge et le Noir and La Chartreuse de Parme, he is highly regarded for the acute analysis of his characters' psychology and considered one of the early and foremost practitioners of realism. A self-proclaimed egotist, the neologism for the same characteristic in his characters was "Beylism".
