He was born in Azinhaga, Portugal, on 16 November 1922 and died in Tías, Lanzarote, on 18 June 2010.
He began writing professionally in his late fifties after years working as a mechanic, translator and journalist.
Baltasar and Blimunda (1982) and Blindness (1995) are among his most celebrated works.
He is the only Portuguese-language writer to have received the Nobel Prize in Literature, awarded in 1998.
He spent his final years in Lanzarote, where the José Saramago Foundation preserves his legacy.
