«Réquiem» is the novel by Antonio Tabucchi, published by Editorial Anagrama in the Compactos collection in paperback (144 pages, in Spanish).
In the form of a diary, Tabucchi turns this work into a homage to Portugal. A man appears without explanation in a deserted, torrid Lisbon, on the last Sunday of July, with the mission of meeting an illustrious deceased character who may only appear at midnight. Over twelve hours, the protagonist abandons himself to chance and revisits stages of his life: past and present blend in a hallucinatory experience where the dead and the living coincide in the same places.
The work belongs to Anagrama's Compactos collection, number 151. Originally published in 1991, this Spanish edition features a translation by Carlos Gumpert and Xavier González Rovira.
For readers of contemporary fiction seeking a short story with a dreamlike, literary atmosphere, with Lisbon as the setting and the world of dreams as the narrative territory.

Antonio Tabucchi was an Italian writer and academic who taught Portuguese language and literature at the University of Siena, Italy. Deeply in love with Portugal, he was an expert, critic and translator of the works of Fernando Pessoa from whom he drew the conceptions of saudade, of fiction and of the heteronyms. Tabucchi was first introduced to Pessoa's works in the 1960s when attending the Sorbonne. He was so charmed that when he returned to Italy, he took an introductory course in Portuguese for a better comprehension of the poet.
