«Nuevas amistades» is the novel by Juan García Hortelano, published by Seix Barral in hardback (268 pages, in Spanish).
A group of young Madrilenians from good families faces a scandal when one of the girls becomes pregnant by her boyfriend without being married. Abortion, illegal and dangerous in 1950s Spain, is proposed as a way out and unleashes fears of gossip and tensions among friends. The narration remains detached and objective, through dialogues and behaviours, to reflect the unease of a generation facing the social prejudices of the time.
Novel winner of the Biblioteca Breve Prize 1959, although this edition is from 1982. The hardback edition has 268 pages.
For readers interested in Spanish post-war social realism and the moral dilemmas of affluent youth under Francoism.

Juan García Hortelano was a Spanish writer. He was born in Madrid. His father was a doctor. When the Spanish Civil War broke out, he was sent with his siblings to Cuenca, only returning to Madrid in 1937 where he lived with his maternal grandparents. The libraries at school and home turned him into an avid reader. Following the war, he entered college in 1941, later studying law at Madrid University. He joined the Civil Service in 1953. Throughout his life, he dedicated himself to writing with fervour and discipline without abandoning his administrative job in Madrid. He cultivated friendships with writers and intellectuals of his generation: Juan Benet, Carlos Barral, Jaime Gil de Biedma, Juan Marsé and Ángel González.
