«Maribel y la extraña familia» is the play by Miguel Mihura, published by Ediciones Cátedra in paperback (144 pages, in Spanish).
Maribel, a prostitute, meets Marcelino, a naive young man who lives with his aunts Paula and Matilde. In love, he presents her as his fiancée, and the aunts welcome her without reservation, unaware of her real occupation. On this misunderstanding, Mihura builds a comedy that portrays the falseness and hypocrisy of social conventions.
A work of 20th-century Spanish theatre, part of the Cátedra Base collection, edited by Ramón Acín Fanlo.
It is frequently used as school reading and as an introduction to 20th-century Spanish theatre.

Miguel Mihura Santos was a Spanish playwright. He is best known for his comedy Tres sombreros de copa (1952), a work of absurd humor that predates similar works by Beckett or Ionesco and that broke with many of the previous conventions of Spanish comic theatre. He was also active as a comics artist.
