In the aftermath of the armistice of September 8, 1943, the life of Ulisse Savino, a veteran of the fascist militia, is shattered. Disoriented by the fall of Mussolini and filled with shame over the Italian betrayal of Nazi Germany, he finds new hope in the creation of the Republic of Salò. Joining the ranks of the Tagliamento Assault Legion, he eagerly anticipates fighting alongside the Nazis against the Allies. However, the reality he encounters is far different, leading him to clash with partisans and the population that supports them, and to confront the violence and atrocities of a fratricidal war. As the conflict progresses, his convictions begin to waver, and the events he witnesses push him to seek a shred of humanity, leading him to view those fighting to liberate Italy from the Nazi-fascist yoke in a new light.
