«Les Enfants de la Huitième Forêt» is the young adult novel by Els Pelgrom, published by Editions Gallimard in paperback (249 pages, in French).
The story takes place on a farm in the Dutch countryside during the winter of 1944, as the war draws to a close. Evert and his friend Noortje observe with childlike curiosity the last months of the German occupation: among the farm chores appear a German soldier, a hidden resistance fighter, and a Jewish girl rescued in the forest.
Work originally published in Dutch as De kinderen van het Achtste Woud (1977), translated into French by Marie-Hélène Sabard. Winner of the Gouden Griffel and the Mildred L. Batchelder Award.
Recommended for young readers from about twelve years old interested in historical novels about the Second World War.
