«Les Chevaliers du Subjonctif» is the novel by Erik Orsenna, published by Le Livre de Poche in paperback (190 pages, in French).
Allegorical fable about language: the dictator Nécrole and the inspector Jargonos want to subjugate words, while Jeanne and Thomas, pursued by the police, take refuge on the island of the Subjonctif. There the subjunctive represents desire and imagination, and language becomes a territory of freedom and creation.
Second instalment of the series «Plaisirs secrets de la grammaire», after «La grammaire est une chanson douce».
Aimed at the general public, especially readers interested in the French language and literature.
