«L'Enfant» is the autobiographical novel by Jules Vallès, published by Gallimard in paperback (444 pages, in French).
The novel follows Jacques Vingtras, the author's alter ego: a childhood marked by maternal severity and lack of affection, and an adolescence that leads to rebellion. Vallès portrays repressive education, family hypocrisy and bourgeois conventions of 19th-century France with direct style and irony.
First instalment of the Jacques Vingtras trilogy, completed by Le Bachelier and L'Insurgé.
For readers of classic French literature and 19th-century autobiographical narrative.
Jules Vallès was a French journalist, author, and left-wing political activist.
