The novel follows the childhood of Jacques Vingtras, a nineteenth-century French boy who grows up between his mother's severity and the harshness of school. Through his experiences, Vallès portrays a repressive society and questions the educational methods and family relations of his time, with a direct yet critical style.
First instalment of the Jacques Vingtras series. This Folio Plus Classique edition includes the complete text with a dossier by Yves Stalloni and an image reading by Alain Jaubert.
Recommended for school reading in secondary education and for those interested in nineteenth-century French literature.
