«Le royaume de Kensuké» is the young-adult novel by Michael Morpurgo, published by Gallimard Jeunesse in paperback (160 pages, in French).
Michael travels with his parents and his dog Stella on a sailboat to circumnavigate the world. After falling overboard during a night watch, he wakes up on a lost island in the Pacific. Exhausted and hungry, he finds water and food that someone has left for him: it is Kensuké, an elderly Japanese man living alone on the island. A friendship grows between them.
The novel was originally published as Kensuke's Kingdom in 1999; this French edition, translated by Diane Ménard and illustrated by François Place, came out in March 2007.
Aimed at young readers aged 10 to 13, with survival adventures and friendship between a boy and an old man.
Sir Michael Andrew Bridge Morpurgo is an English book author, poet, playwright, and librettist who is known best for children's novels such as War Horse (1982). His work is noted for its "magical storytelling", for recurring themes such as the triumph of an outsider or survival, for characters' relationships with nature, and for vivid settings such as the Cornish coast or the trenches of the First World War. Morpurgo was the third Children's Laureate, from 2003 to 2005, and is President of BookTrust, a children's reading charity.
