«Le Nabab» (volume 1) is the first part of the historical novel by Irène Frain, published by Le Livre de Poche in paperback (480 pages, in French).
Set in the 18th century, the novel follows René Madec, a cabin boy from Quimper who arrives in rags in Pondicherry and ends up becoming a nabob, lord of French India. Between palaces and caravanserais, the action combines his passion for the Princess of Godh with military campaigns, elephants, sepoys and bazaars.
The original, published in 1982 in two volumes, won the Prix des Maisons de la Presse 1982.
