«Le Lion Blanc» is the children's novel by Michael Morpurgo, published by Gallimard Jeunesse in paperback (124 pages, in French).
On the South African savannah at the turn of the twentieth century, Bertie adopts an orphaned white lion cub and becomes inseparable from him. As he grows up, the boy is sent to a boarding school in Europe and the lion is sold to a circus. Years later, in the midst of war, the promise of reunion and the memories of that friendship mingle with dreams and reality.
The original title is The Butterfly Lion (1996), translated by Noël Chassériau with illustrations by Jean-Michel Payet. It is from the Folio Cadet collection and won the Nestlé Smarties Book Prize.
A read aimed at children and young adults, especially for those who enjoy stories about animals and friendship.

Sir Michael Andrew Bridge Morpurgo is an English book author, poet, playwright, and librettist who is known best for children's novels such as War Horse (1982). His work is noted for its "magical storytelling", for recurring themes such as the triumph of an outsider or survival, for characters' relationships with nature, and for vivid settings such as the Cornish coast or the trenches of the First World War. Morpurgo was the third Children's Laureate, from 2003 to 2005, and is President of BookTrust, a children's reading charity.
