«Le gone du Chaâba» is the novel by Azouz Begag, published by Points in paperback (243 pages, in French).
The action takes place in the Chaâba, a shantytown by the Rhône, near Lyon, inhabited by Algerian families who fled poverty. The children grow up around the well, games and chores done on the ground; each morning they go to school with the others and there discover a world that offers them other possibilities.
First novel by Azouz Begag, originally published in 1986 and adapted into film by Christophe Ruggia in 1997.
A novel commonly read in French courses, also useful as an introduction to childhood and Algerian immigration in France.

He was the delegate minister for equal opportunities of France in the government of French Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin till 5 April 2007.
