«Le Fou d’Elsa» is the lyric poem by Louis Aragon, published by Gallimard in 2002 in paperback (549 pages, in French).
Set in 1492, when Granada falls to the Christians and Columbus reaches the Indies, the poem shows the Muslims of Spain without a future and marked by the conflicts of Islam. An old street singer, the Medjnoûn or «Fou», meditates on time and true love; from his song is born a «Medjnoûn and Elsa» inspired by Persian poetry.
The work was originally published in 1963. This edition belongs to the «Poésie/Gallimard» collection.

Louis Aragon was a French poet who was one of the leading voices of the surrealist movement in France. He co-founded with André Breton and Philippe Soupault the surrealist review Littérature. He was also a novelist and editor, a long-time member of the Communist Party and a member of the Académie Goncourt. After 1959, he was a frequent nominee for the Nobel Prize in Literature.
