«Lazarillo de Tormes» is the 16th-century picaresque novel, of anonymous authorship, published by Austral in paperback (160 pages, in Spanish).
Lázaro, a town crier from Toledo, tells in the first person his life and adversities in the service of several masters. The story shows a 16th-century Spain dominated by deceit and appearances, with material and moral misery portrayed with humour and irony. The work is a classic of the picaresque novel and a precursor of the modern novel.
