«L'Absent» is the historical novel by Patrick Rambaud, published by Le Grand Livre du Mois in paperback (354 pages, in French).
In 1814, with Paris under siege, Octave, an imperial agent, infiltrates royalist circles and then spies on Napoleon, confined at Fontainebleau, until the abdication and exile to Elba. The novel shows a vulnerable emperor, surrounded by spies and onlookers, while his soldiers toast «the absent one».
