«La sonrisa de Maquiavelo» is the biography written by Maurizio Viroli, published by Tusquets Editores in paperback (328 pages, in Spanish).
Viroli reclaims Niccolò Machiavelli (1469-1527) as a lucid historian and political thinker, against his reputation as a defender of cynicism and of the end justifying the means. It traces his life from diplomatic missions to writing, and argues that his smile expressed disillusionment, not cynicism.
The book belongs to the Tiempo de Memoria collection and was published in March 2000; in the catalogue it appears in the History and Education sections.
Aimed at readers interested in the history of political thought and in the figure of Machiavelli.
