«La sombra del águila» is the historical novel by Arturo Pérez-Reverte, published by Punto de Lectura in paperback (173 pages, in Spanish).
In the 1812 Russian campaign, a battalion of Spanish prisoners forced to serve Napoleon tries to desert to the Russian lines; the emperor interprets it as heroism and orders a cavalry charge, with unforeseeable consequences. With humour and a tragicomic tone, Pérez-Reverte portrays war, patriotism and anonymous heroism.
For readers of historical fiction and for followers of Arturo Pérez-Reverte who appreciate an ironic view of the Napoleonic wars.
