«La segunda muerte de Ramón Mercader» is the spy novel by Jorge Semprún, published by Planeta in paperback (362 pages, in Spanish).
A Spaniard on a business trip to Amsterdam is followed by agents of the CIA and East Germany; his name is Ramón Mercader, like Trotsky's assassin. The spy intrigue serves as a framework for a web of evocations of the civil war, concentration camps and Stalinist prisons, with echoes of identity, memory and fiction.
Translation from the French by Carlos Pujol; original: La Deuxième mort de Ramón Mercader. Winner of the Prix Femina 1969.
A read for those interested in twentieth-century European narrative and in novels where espionage intersects with historical memory.

Jorge Semprún Maura was a Spanish writer and politician who lived in France most of his life and wrote primarily in French. From 1953 to 1962, during the dictatorship of Francisco Franco, Semprún lived clandestinely in Spain working as an organizer for the exiled Communist Party of Spain, but was expelled from the party in 1964. After the death of Franco and the change to a democratic government, he served as Minister of Culture in Spain's socialist government from 1988 to 1991.
