«La Regenta, I» is the novel by Leopoldo Alas Clarín, edited by Gonzalo Sobejano, published by Castalia Ediciones in paperback (592 pages, in Spanish).
Published in 1884 and set in Vetusta, a literary transposition of Oviedo during the Restoration, it narrates the life of Ana Ozores, married to the former regent, in a provincial society dominated by hypocrisy and gossip. The passion of the canon Fermín de Pas for her unleashes the struggle between carnal desire and spiritual anxiety.
Volume I of La Regenta, published in the Clásicos Castalia collection (number 110). Includes a biographical and critical introduction, bibliography, and a prologue by Benito Pérez Galdós.
Intended for readers of classic fiction and students of nineteenth-century Spanish literature.

Leopoldo Enrique García-Alas y Ureña, also known as Clarín, was a Spanish realist novelist and journalist born in Zamora. His inflammatory articles, known as paliques (“chitchat”), as well as his advocacy of liberalism and anti-clericalism, made him a formidable and controversial critical voice. He died in Oviedo.
