La novela narra la historia de Ana Ozores, una joven casada con un hombre mayor en la ciudad de Vetusta, y sus intentos de encontrar satisfacción personal en una sociedad opresiva y llena de hipocresía. A través de sus relaciones y conflictos, la obra ofrece una crítica mordaz de la sociedad burguesa y la influencia de la Iglesia en la España de la época.
