La papallona, publicada en 1882, es la primera novela de Narcís Oller. En esta obra, Oller empieza a realizar su propósito principal: describir literariamente la realidad de la sociedad catalana de su tiempo. La papallona, expresión fiel de la menestralía de Barcelona, marcó el inicio del naturalismo en Cataluña y dio a Narcís Oller fama europea. En 1885 la novela fue traducida al francés y fue prologada por Émile Zola. Narcís Oller (Valls, 1846 - Barcelona, 1930) es el fundador de la novela catalana moderna. Sus grandes obras de este género son: La papallona, Vilaniu, La febre d'or, L'escanyapobres y Pilar Prim, la mayoría traducidas a varias lenguas. Es autor de las novelas breves Isabel de Galceran, La bogeria, La bufetada y Lo transplantat. Dentro de su producción encontramos también numerosos cuentos.
Narcís Oller i de Moragas was a Catalan lawyer and novelist who initially wrote in the traditions of literary realism and naturalism, later adapting his style to the Modernisme movement, the Catalan equivalent of Art Nouveau. Despite his stylistic evolution, he is considered one of the leading Catalan authors of the 19th century.
