La muerte de Iván Ilich

Synopsis of La muerte de Iván Ilich

Ivan Ilyich is a high-ranking official who has dedicated his entire life to climbing the hierarchical ladder. After an apparently minor domestic accident, he discovers that he has very little time left to live. As his illness worsens, he becomes bedridden. Plagued by severe pain and irritated by what he considers an unfair fate, his relationship with his family deteriorates. He only finds some comfort in the company of Gerasim, the young servant who cares for him selflessly. Gradually, his interaction with Gerasim and his reflection on his own life path allow him to realize what is truly valuable in life, replace resentment toward his family with sincere compassion, and accept death without fear. Considered by Vladimir Nabokov to be Tolstoy's most artistic, perfect, and refined work.
