«La mer cruelle» is the war novel by Nicholas Monsarrat, published by Editions Phébus in paperback (512 pages, in French).
The work tells the story of a British crew during the Battle of the Atlantic (1939-1945), within the framework of the Second World War. Nicholas Monsarrat drew on his own experience to portray the harshness of naval combat, the thousands of sunken ships and the coexistence with fear and loss, without hiding the fascination that the sea awakens.
The work was originally published in 1951 as "The Cruel Sea" and won the W.H. Heinemann Award in 1952. This French edition, published in 2004, belongs to the Libretto collection (no. 170) and includes a translation by Hélène Claireau.
Recommended for readers of historical and war fiction, especially for those who enjoy naval and war stories.

Lieutenant Commander Nicholas John Turney Monsarrat FRSL RNVR was a British novelist known for his sea stories, particularly The Cruel Sea (1951) and Three Corvettes (1942–1945), but perhaps known best internationally for his novels, The Tribe That Lost Its Head and its sequel, Richer Than All His Tribe.
