Alistair MacLean was the son of a Church of Scotland minister and spent much of his childhood in Daviot.
His native language was Scottish Gaelic, reflecting his deep Scottish roots.
He served in the Royal Navy during World War II, which provided the inspiration for his debut novel, HMS Ulysses.
Before becoming a full-time writer, he worked as a school teacher in Rutherglen.
During the 1960s, he published two of his novels under the pseudonym Ian Stuart.
