«La media distancia» is the novel by Alejandro Gándara, published by Destino in paperback (276 pages, in Spanish).
A 1,500-metre runner nicknamed el Charro arrives in Madrid from Salamanca, signed by a capital team, while he notices his days of triumph are waning. Before the gaze of a narrator, the novel portrays the Spain of the 1970s and reconstructs the protagonist's past, a time halfway along in search of explanation and light.
Emblematic work of the new Spanish narrative, number 284 of the Destinolibro collection. Juan Benet noted that the novel could serve as a reflection of its era.
For readers of contemporary fiction interested in the portrait of 1970s Spain and in characters facing personal decline.
