Doc McCoy is a charming and calculating criminal who, after getting out of prison, plans a bank robbery in Texas with his wife Carol and a dangerous psychopath, Rudy Torrento. Although the robbery goes as planned, the escape to California is complicated, as the police are after them and Torrento seeks revenge. During their odyssey in search of freedom, Doc and Carol McCoy will face difficulties and receive unexpected help. 'The Getaway' is a novel that initially went unnoticed, but Sam Peckinpah's 1972 film adaptation, starring Steve McQueen and Ali MacGraw, gave it the classic status it deserved.
James Myers Thompson was an American novelist and screenwriter, known for his hardboiled crime fiction.
