«La guerra de los botones» is the children's novel by Louis Pergaud, published by Editorial Bruguera in paperback (333 pages, in Spanish).
The novel recounts the adventures of two gangs of children from neighbouring villages who wage a relentless war: each capture serves to tear off the enemy's buttons, and the number of buttons obtained becomes the measure of each side's honour and courage. With skirmishes and revenge, it portrays with humour the childish logic of the French rural world.
The novel was published in 1912. This 1982 edition is from the Club Joven Bruguera collection, number 55, with illustrations by Néstor Salas and translation by Noëlle Boer and M.ª Victoria Cirlot.
Aimed at children and young readers, it combines adventure, humour and a critical portrait of childhood.

Louis Pergaud was a French novelist, war poet, and soldier, whose principal works were known as "Animal Stories" due to his featuring animals of the Franche-Comté in lead roles. His most notable work was the novel La Guerre des boutons (1912). It has been reprinted more than 30 times, and is included on the French high-school curriculum.
