At sixty, Liam Pennywell—a man living a 'minor key' life with two failed marriages, three daughters, and only one friend—is forced to leave his teaching job. Facing the need to reinvent himself, he moves from a central apartment to a sad suburban one. After being attacked by a thief on his first night, he wakes up in a hospital bed. Obsessed with his inability to reconstruct the events, he meets Eunice at a neurologist's office. She is a naive and spontaneous woman who works as a 'professional rememberer,' acting as an external memory for an elderly man. Drawn to her and her mystery, Liam begins to see her and discovers that the days he imagined spending in solitary reading can be filled with forgotten feelings and the presence of a noisy family. Anne Tyler returns with an intense and delicate novel about a man's rebirth.
