En septiembre de 1939, Wladyslaw Szpilman, un joven pianista en Varsovia, tocó el 'Nocturno' en Do sostenido menor de Chopin para la radio local mientras las bombas alemanas caían sobre la ciudad. Más tarde, un artefacto alemán destruyó la central eléctrica y la estación de radio polaca fue silenciada. La guerra sumió a Varsovia en el horror de la ocupación nazi. Encerrados en el gueto, los judíos fueron gradualmente diezmados. Szpilman vio morir a muchos amigos y a toda su familia, logrando sobrevivir milagrosamente entre las ruinas de su ciudad, gracias a la intervención de un oficial alemán que le escuchó tocar ese mismo 'Nocturno' de Chopin en un piano encontrado entre los escombros.
